Internal Family Systems (IFS), Counselling Across Ontario
Understanding Internal Family Systems Therapy
Developed in the 1980s by psychologist Richard Schwartz, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy provides a unique framework for understanding and addressing internal conflicts. Originally a family therapist, Schwartz's interactions with clients led him to explore the concept of internal parts in depth. In 2015, IFS gained recognition as an evidence-based therapy by the National Registry for Evidence-Based Programs in the US. It has been applied in various contexts, including pain management, with one notable study focusing on arthritis patients.
Core Concepts of IFS Therapy
At its core, IFS therapy suggests that our psyche is made up of multiple 'parts,' each possessing distinct roles, emotions, and perspectives. This model helps individuals to better understand their internal mental landscape and to navigate their thoughts and feelings more effectively.
Stages of IFS Therapy
Mapping the System: The therapeutic process begins with helping clients identify and understand their various internal parts. This includes exploring the parts' roles, relationships, and their impacts on the individual's life.
Unburdening: In this stage, clients work to address and release emotional burdens or negative beliefs that have been carried over time. This often requires revisiting and reframing past experiences and the emotions associated with them.
Integration: The final phase of IFS therapy focuses on integrating the parts with new understandings and fostering a collaborative internal environment. This aims to develop healthier coping mechanisms and interactions between the internal parts.
Applications of IFS Therapy
IFS therapy has been effectively applied to a wide range of psychological issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship difficulties, showcasing its versatility and effectiveness in mental health treatment.
